I dream of a church …
…where theological convictions are held deeply, but with humility;
…where shared gifts evoke gratitude;
…where both tradition and innovation find a home;
…where the people’s generosity continually stretches the congregation’s vision for ministry;
…where diversity signals gift, and not threat;
…where those who have received the hospitality of Christ are quick to extend it to others;
…where folks outdo one another in showing honor;
…where the people have fun together as they do the work of the church;
…where there is always room at the table or in the pew for more;
…where the waters of baptism never dry;
…where the table’s welcome is wide;
…where people sense they are safe to explore their questions and fears;
…where disciples discover the myriad ways they are sent to love their neighbors;
…where worship engages all the senses and empowers everything else the congregation does;
…where voices of all ages join their hearts to sing joyfully to the glory of God;
…where people speak the language of lament when needed;
…where prodigals are welcomed home;
…where reconciliation is everyone’s desire;
…where children are at home in the sanctuary;
…where joy abounds;
…where hope flourishes;
…where faith is not threatened by doubt;
…where the mind is fully engaged;
…where preaching is the task of the whole church;
…where the scriptures are approached with expectation;
…and where everyone is seeking to make their life a living doxology.
